Employing Refugees

Federal Statutes

Protection for refugees against discrimination in employment is provided primarily through the antidiscrimination provisions of the Immigration and Nationality Act, as amended by the Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986.

Information regarding the law and filing complaints is available from the Office of Special Counsel for Immigration Related Unfair Employment Practices of the Civil Rights Division of the US Department of Justice. The Office of Special Counsel operates an employee hotline for asking questions and/or filing complaints. There is also a hotline for employers who seek information regarding work authorization, I-9 requirements, and what employers are permitted to do and not permitted to do. These hotline numbers are listed here.
